Todd Hoyer is compelled by a desire to express his experience of life's many challenges and the lessons therein.

He began woodturning in the late 70's and quickly realized his vessels were a direct reflection of his inner journey: "This was a time in my life when I was trying to determine who I was with all my own flaws, and how to bring out their positive aspects…my vessel forms began to open up, revealing the hidden interiors through the flaws in the wood. "

The Winged Series eventually developed from there. "My career and my life were soaring." The X Series followed, after divorce and the tragic death of his wife left Hoyer extremely angry, sad, and depressed. "I no longer wanted to show the pretty side of the wood." Subsequently, in the Ring series he carved rings into his work "to represent life's paths and their interaction with other paths." His passage Series came next, consisting of solid wood forms with openings, or passages, through them – a metaphor for "encountering and dealing with obstacles in one's path…unless you pass through, the obstacle remains before you."

On a lighter note, he once burnt a message in Morse code onto a piece entitled "S.O.S." when finances were at an all time low. (Fortunately, the piece sold.) These are but a few examples of the courage of spirit and depth of humanity expressed in Todd Hoyer's unique and compelling woodturnings.
